Spring brings more break-ins and porch theft to KC. Here are 6 smart security upgrades — from cameras to smart doorbells — to lock down your home this season.

6 Spring Security Upgrades Every Kansas City Homeowner Should Make

Warmer weather is great for a lot of reasons — but it also brings some security concerns that Kansas City homeowners should be thinking about. Windows stay open. Garage doors are left up. Kids are playing outside. More packages land on doorsteps. And statistically, property crime in the metro area ticks up in spring and summer months when houses are more accessible.

Most of these risks are preventable with a few smart upgrades. Here are six things you should take care of before the season really kicks in.

1. Check Your Front Door Situation

The front door is the most common entry point — both for legitimate visitors and for people who shouldn’t be there. A Ring Video Doorbell lets you see and speak to anyone at your door from your phone, whether you’re home or not.

If you already have a Ring, test it. Make sure the motion detection zones are set correctly, that the WiFi connection is strong, and that notifications are actually coming through to your phone. A doorbell camera that doesn’t alert you is just a decoration.

If you don’t have one, spring is the right time to add it. Professional installation ensures the doorbell is wired correctly (not relying on a battery that dies at the worst time), positioned at the right height, and connected to your home network with a strong, reliable signal.

2. Identify Your Blind Spots

Walk around your property and look at it the way someone casing a house would. Where could someone approach without being seen? Common blind spots include:

  • Side gates and alley access points
  • The area behind the garage
  • Back doors and sliding glass doors
  • First-floor windows hidden by landscaping
  • The driveway (especially if it curves or is set back from the road)

Every one of these spots is a candidate for a camera. A properly placed network camera system with 4K resolution, night vision, and NVR recording covers the areas a doorbell can’t reach.

3. Test Your Existing Cameras

If you already have security cameras, pull up the feeds and actually look at them. Are the images clear? Has a tree branch grown into the frame since last year? Are the cameras still pointed where they should be, or has wind or settling shifted them? Is the recording system actually working — or is the hard drive full?

I get calls every week from homeowners who had cameras installed but never checked them. An incident happens, they go to pull the footage, and there’s nothing usable. A quick spring check can prevent that.

4. Secure the Garage

Open garages are one of the easiest targets for opportunistic theft in KC neighborhoods. It takes 30 seconds for someone to walk in and grab tools, bikes, or packages while you’re in the backyard.

Consider adding a camera pointed at the garage entrance, or a sensor that alerts you when the garage door has been open for more than a set period. Smart garage controllers that connect to your phone are a simple, effective upgrade.

5. Light It Up

Outdoor lighting is one of the simplest and most effective security measures. Motion-activated lights at entry points, along walkways, and in dark corners around your property deter most would-be intruders. Pair them with cameras and you have both deterrence and documentation.

6. Get a Professional Security Assessment

Every property is different. The layout of your lot, your fence lines, your neighbor’s visibility, your tree coverage — all of these affect where cameras should go and what kind of system makes sense for your home.

At SmartHome Connect, I offer a free home security assessment. I walk your property with you, point out the vulnerabilities, and recommend a camera and doorbell setup that fits your home and your budget. No pressure, no upsell — just honest advice from someone who’s been doing this for over 12 years in the KC metro.

Our security services include:

  • Ring Camera & Doorbell installation: Video doorbells, indoor/outdoor cameras, all app-configured
  • Network Camera Systems: 4K cameras with NVR recording, 8-channel systems, remote app access
